This list is full of little things that you can do every day to make yourself feel better and to help you grow as a person. Whether you want to start developing your goals or work on lowering your anxiety, I hope these tips help you start your self-care journey.

10 self-care tips and activities for 2021

  • Make Sure You’re Sleeping

This first tip might sound basic, but it’s the foundation of your self-care routine. You want to make sure that you’re getting at least six hours of sleep a night. We’re constantly surrounded by distractions, so it’s no surprise that our sleep is suffering. Get into the habit of turning your ‘do not disturb’ mode onto your phone to silence your notifications. Try to avoid using any of your techs in the thirty minutes or so before you head to bed. If you are struggling with sleeping, it might be useful to track your sleep schedule either with your phone or in a notebook.

  • Develop a Schedule

Wherever you are in your academic or career journey, you need to develop a schedule. With more of us working from home, it’s easy to get caught up in our work and to find yourself staring at the computer for hours on end. Make sure you schedule in for regular breaks and take a proper lunch break. Hold yourself accountable to your schedule by booking your breaks into your digital calendar. Once you’ve developed your schedule, add in little pockets of self-care. This time could be spent reading a few pages of a book or trying a new recipe.

  • Write daily Affirmations

We all need to take a period of reflection at some point during the day. Every day you should write out an affirmation. I recommend doing this before you go to sleep or first thing in the morning. The affirmation will affirm to your goals and ambitions, and make you focus on what your end goals are. You can write your affirmations on a post-it note and place them around your room, or save them in a jar to read later.

  • Move Your Body

Exercising for 30 minutes a day can change your life. It can instantly destress you, as well as working both your mind and body. Exercising has been proven to improve your mental health. You don’t need to suddenly start lifting weights at the gym. Find a workout that you enjoy – like HIIT or yoga – and schedule it in for every other day. On the days when you’re not working out, go for a leisurely stroll outside for thirty minutes to move your body. You never know, you might find that you love to work out!

  • Treat yourself to Baths

With our face pace lifestyles, opting for a bath instead of a shower is a rare treat. Help your body relax by adding in a bath bomb or bath oil. If you suffer from any aches and pains in your body, you can add in Epsom salts as well. You want to create a relaxing environment for you to unwind and relax from your stresses of the day and week.

  • Start Journaling

The best way to understand what you need to work on during your self-care journey is to write about your feelings. Go out and buy yourself a nice little notebook and dedicate it to your self-care journey. Write notes to yourself every day. They can be about how you’re feeling, something good that has happened or even a funny joke. As you get more used to the journaling process, you’ll find yourself opening up more and benefiting from being able to write about your feelings.

  • Find a Relaxing Playlist

One of the easiest ways to switch off is by listening to music. Spend some time on Spotify, YouTube, or Apple Music putting together songs that you find relaxing. Try to avoid music that contains lyrics as this can be distracting. Search for classical music and listen to it while working or when you feel stressed. Classical music is also the perfect background noise for meditation and yoga.

  • Fuel Your Body

Work on your relationship with food. Don’t skip breakfast! Your teachers were right when they said it was the most important meal of the day. Make sure you’re drinking two liters of water a day and eating your five portions of fruit and vegetables. Your body and mind work in unison with each other. If you want to work on your self-care, you need to fuel your body with healthy foods and snacks.

  • Write Three Things Your Grateful For

An important part of your self-care journey is being able to experience joy in the little moments. Every day, sit down and write three things that you’re grateful for. You can write this in a notebook or a post-note but try and keep them all together so that you can look back on them. The moments can be as simple as trying a new type of tea or watching an episode of your favorite TV show. You want to identify a few points from the day when you felt happy and grateful.

  • Take a self-care Social Media Detox

You might not think it, but your Instagram strolling can be ruining your self-care routine. Comparing yourself to the edited photos that are all over social media is the last thing that you want to do. You can take a detox for a few days, or limit your time on social media to thirty minutes a day. Don’t be afraid to unfollow people that make you question yourself or feel bad. You can create your own safe space on the internet that helps with your self-care and development.
